Mental health coaching really works! The evidence emerges

The evidence is emerging – at long last – that coaching really works for mental health.

Modern Health is a platform coaching and therapy provider based in the US. I am proud to work for them as an associate Fellow Coach and #MentalHealthCoach. It’s the real thing – professionally rigorous, humanistic and inclusive – and working around the world with businesses at every scale. From Sony to emerging tech firms.

    Making a real difference

In a new paper in the Journal of Administration Policy & Mental Health, Sara Sagui Henson and colleagues underline the benefits of an average of just 2.5 hours of professional certified Mental Health Coaching for 266 working adults studied:

✅ Among elevated risk users, 71.7% improved or recovered from depression or anxiety

✅ Participants improved in distress tolerance, perceived stress, self-compassion, and mindfulness.

This is coaching at its best – building safe and trusting relationships, supporting autonomy, and making a real difference to people’s lives. It is also democratising and facilitating access to a service which many can’t access – and which works alongside therapy.

    Prevention and targeted support

I’m proud to be doing work like this. As the paper says, “from a population health perspective, scalable interventions must support both prevention for individuals at low risk (helping them build skills and resilience to prevent escalation of symptoms) and targeted support for those with elevated clinical need.”

I see these improvements myself – and clients tell me they are able to do things such as:

    • recover from burnout
    • improve their anxiety
    • repair and restore their relationships with others
    • discover their inner confidence and self-esteem.

If you think you could benefit mentally (or otherwise) from coaching, I’d be happy to chat. You can book a chat with me here.
