Is there anything to see in there? How to feel the fear and do it anyway

Many years ago, I worked as an ecologist in the rainforest in Borneo.

Emerging from the trees to the riverbank after a long day, I encountered a tourist who was standing looking at the dark entrance to the forest. “Is there anything to see in there?”, he said.

What was in that statement? Ignorance of the richness of rainforest wildlife? Perhaps. Doubt about whether it is safe to enter an alien world – and whether that wildlife might bite? Probably. Seeking a boost of confidence to take the first step? For sure.

I said something encouraging, but when I looked back over my shoulder they were still standing there.

    • What is your rainforest?
    • What do you fear starting or trying for the first time?
    • What’s the worst that can happen?
    • What’s the best that can happen?
