Introduction to nature based coaching skills

Welcome to Nature-Based Coaching Skillsā€”a transformative 10-week program to help you integrate nature into your practice in a way that is evidence-based, meaningful, and impactful.

I’m James Farrell, and I’m a professional coach and a chartered environmentalist. I’ve been leading change for nature and the environment for over 30 years now, and I’ve been coaching clients outdoors for almost a decade.

    A growing movement

It’s exciting that there’s now a growing movement of coaches who are interested in coaching outdoors and bringing nature and climate change into their work. More clients are asking to work in this way, and they’re aware, in their personal lives, of the great benefits of being in natural places. More organizations are looking to improve their impact on environmental and social issues and contribute positively to their communities.

    Work we can do anywhere

In nature-based coaching, we work with natural systems. We deepen our relationship with nature, improve our health and well-being, and bring new tools and creativity to our practice as coaches. And this is work that we can do anywhereā€”wherever you are in the world. It can be in a busy urban green space, a bit like this one; it can be in remote, wild places; it can even be indoors. We can work face-to-face, remotely, and in any way that truly suits our professional backgrounds, our accreditations, and plays to our own strengths and styles as coaches.

    Benefits of the course

The course aims to help you in a number of important ways.

    • First, to inspire confidence and establish credibility through an understanding of the science that underpins your craft.
    • Second, to find a richer and more rewarding relationship with nature that we can use to boost our health, happiness, and well-being.
    • Third, to connect your clients more deeply with the present moment so that they can find greater clarity and creativity.
    • And finally, to inspire our clients to support the natural world and create ripples of systemic change.

    The science guides us

The science guides us to some clear benefits from connecting with nature and coaching outdoors.

    • People who visit nature at least once a week are nearly twice as likely to report good health.
    • People who engage and connect with nature are more satisfied with life and have greater self-esteem.
    • Nature connection helps boost our mental health, promotes calmness and presence, and enables greater creative thinking.
    • Clients who work outdoors have reported higher well-being and a stronger growth mindset.
    • And nature-connected people are up to twice as likely to take action in daily life, which is good for nature and good for the environment.

    Course structure

The course involves six live online sessions. We’re going to be co-coaching, there will be action learning as a community, and reflective journaling to consolidate our learning.

And, really excitingly, thereā€™s going to be the option for a face-to-face workshop at Knepp – the world-famous rewilding project in Sussex.
