My first foray into recorded meditations features a dawn chorus, and hopes to inspire us to feel a sense of compassion for the natural world.
The recording comes from a workshop I led in International Coaching Week this year. The recording was made by the sound artist Hazel Reeves at the Knepp estate in Sussex, UK. Knepp is a world famous ‘rewilding’ site, and is the star of the new movie released in UK and Irish cinemas last friday. Knepp is forming a new stronghold for threatened species such as nightingale and turtle dove – and if you listen closely you will also spot a springtime cuckoo!
Compassion is central to buddhism – and is composed of two parts, the recognition of another’s ‘suffering’, and the ‘active kindness’ that emerges to alleviate it. It is also one of the five pathways that have been shown to strengthen our connection to nature – pathways that are essential to nature connected coaching.
The nature meditation therefore includes a reflection on nature’s suffering – as well as active kindness. I hope you enjoy it.
I will be leading a workshop on compassion in nature coaching at this year’s Outdoor Coaching Festival at Henley Business School on 12 July.
